Chapter 18

“Maybe,” I grumble, “but I think an Air Elementis on our side would be fantastic. Think about it, first time Vay brews up a storm it could spit it right back in her face. Maybe hit her with a few of her own lightning bolts.”

“Give her a taste of her own magic,” Cara exults, “by sizzling some of her tail feathers. Or how about when she’s out flying our Elementis could turn the air into a brick wall or a granite mountain that she’d smack into face-first.”

“Excellent,” I grin, “or how about—”

“Save your overactive imaginations,” Phigby growls, “until we get back to the company. We need to let them know what we’ve learned and decide on a course of action.”

“Wait,” Cara protests, “we haven’t learned where Vay has her portal hidden.”

“Oh, but we have,” Phigby declares with a grim face. “It took but a few moments of contemplation and consideration given what Hooper saw.”

He pats the tree’s rough inner bark. “Our sincerest gratitude, friend, we are indebted to you.” Without waiting for a response from us, he marches toward the entryway.

“We have?” I say to Cara. “We know the location of Vay’s portal?”

She shrugs in answer. “I guess we have, though it’s still a secret to me.”

“And me,” I return.

Outside, the shadows blend together as the evening deepens. Here and there, cooking fires are lit as the Uhlan begin their preparations for an evening meal. My own stomach tells me that I’d gladly join in one of the groups sitting close to the fire waiting for a bite to eat.

However, the length and urgency behind Phigby’s strides tell me that food is the last thing on his mind. Both Cara and I half jog behind him just to keep up.

When we reach the company, we find them munching on the last of the cheese and goat meat. Amil tosses a small hunk of cheese to each of us but instead of taking a bite out of his curd, Phigby says, “Thanks to Hooper and the Whisperer, I believe I not only know where the dwarves are held captive but possibly where Vay’s portal lies in secret.”

At that, everyone stops eating and turns an expectant face to Phigby. However, instead of answering directly, Phigby says to Amil, “Liam said that the dwarves were in the north, a place of fire and ice, right?’

“Right,” Amil agrees, “but that covers a lot of ground. We need more than that to even begin a search.”

“Indeed,” Phigby answers. “However, what if I told you that they’re being held under a mountain in the north, cone-shaped and covered in deep snow. The mountaintop spits smoke and fire. It sits within an enormous bowl, ringed by mountains that pierce the clouds and are snow-covered, too.

“Surrounding the central mountain on all sides are smaller, rounded mountains that do the same. It is a place of cinder and ash, and noxious vapors, a slice of Hades upon Erdron.”

He leans toward Amil, his eyes intense, and locks eyes with the big man.
